Fellowships

The Center offers short-term fellowships of  two months with the possibility of extending to four months duration) to support visitors pursuing post-doctoral research in Greek and Latin epigraphy and palaeography:

  • The Arthur and Joyce Gordon Fellowship in Latin epigraphy
  • The Sterling and Elizabeth Dow Fellowship and The The A. Geoffrey Woodhead Fellowship in Greek epigraphy and history
  • The Paul E. and Sandra J. Watkins Fellowship in Greek and Latin history and epigraphy
  • The Virgina Brown Fellowship in Latin palaeography.

The fellowships pay a stipend of $2,000 per month and recipients are expected to be in residence during the tenure of the award and are encouraged to participate in the activities of the University. Current students, faculty, and staff of the Ohio State University are not ordinarily considered for the award.

In addition to a comprehensive library to support the study of Greek and Latin inscriptions, the Center houses a number of special collections, including squeezes, archival photos and notes donated by eminent scholars of epigraphy, Roman coins, and manuscripts on microfilm.

There is no application form. Applicants are requested to submit a curriculum vitae and a brief research proposal (not to exceed three pages) by email to epig@osu.edu. The applicant should also arrange to have three letters of recommendation to be sent at the same email address.

There are two application cycles with two deadlines: March 31st (for applicants who wish to be fellows in the Autumn semester) and September 31st (for applicants who want to have their residency in the Spring semester). Applicants can request funding for a period of two to four months. Awards will be announced four to six weeks after each deadline.

The Center is continuing to raise funds in support of all of our post-doctoral fellowships. If you would like to contribute to one of the fellowship funds, please click on the "I give" button on our homepage or send a check made out to "The Ohio State University" directly to the Center and your donation will go to the appropriate fellowship fund.
