Ilya Dines,  Library of Congress:  An Introduction to Typology of Medieval Bookbindings

The lecture offers an introduction and overview of the history of medieval European bookbinding. The first part of the lecture will focus on main types of bookbindings and will cover the period from the sixth to the fifteenth centuries. Emphasis will be made on the process of production, basic structure, and most important elements of the bindings. Examples of bookbindings will be drawn from collections at the Ohio University Library. The second part of lecture will focus on key aspects of the description of bookbindings, and will address how these characteristics can be used to precisely date and localize manuscripts.
