Ohio State is in the process of revising websites and program materials to accurately reflect compliance with the law. While this work occurs, language referencing protected class status or other activities prohibited by Ohio Senate Bill 1 may still appear in some places. The Francis Newton Research Collection

Professor Francis Newton

The family and estate of Francis Newton have generously donated his invaluable research collection to the Center for Epigraphical and Palaeographical Studies where it will be permanently housed.  Professor Newton was one of the leading scholars in the field of Beneventan script, the miniscule current in southern Italy in the Middle Ages.  His seminal book, The Scriptorium and Library at Monte Cassino 1058-1105 (Cambridge 1999) revealed the riches available to medieval scholars therein, and his most recent monograph, published with Erik Kwakkel, Medicine at Monte Cassino: Constantine the African and the Oldest Manuscript of His Pantegni, provides an illuminating portrait of medical study at Monte Cassino.  The collection complements the Virginia Brown Research Collection that the Center obtained in 2010.  We are extremely grateful to the family of the late Professor Newton for this important donation. Scholars interested in this material should contact Wendy Watkins at epig@osu.edu.
