The Francis Newton Research Collection in Beneventan Script

Professor Francis Newton

Francis Newton, who passed away on February 14, 2025, has generously donated his invaluable collection of notes, microfilms and books to the Center.  Professor  Newton was a noted scholar in the fields of classical reception and Latin palaeography and was the author such seminal works as The Scriptorium and Library at Monte Cassino 1058-1105 and Medicine at Monte Cassino. Constantine the African and the Oldest Manuscript of his Pantegni (with Erik Kwakkel).  We are delighted to have this important collection on permanent deposit at the Center.  Scholars who are working in Beneventan script and medieval medicine are encouraged to apply for a Virginia Brown Fellowship to make use of this important research collection.
