News of our students: John Richards

John Richards, a doctoral candidate in the Department of Greek and Latin, was admitted into the Summer Greek Palaeography course held at Oxford in July 2010. He also won a scholarship to the Virginia Rare Book School and was the recipient of the Barbara Hanawalt Award from the Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies for the best graduate paper written on a medieval topic for 2010. He gave a paper entitled "A newly discovered manuscript of the poetical works of Hippolytus Grassetus in the William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library of the Ohio State University" to the Neo-Latin panel of the APA convention held in San Antonio, January 2011. In the summer of 2011 he will participate in the Neo-Latin seminar held at Sassoferrato, Italy. John received a Charles Babcock Rome prize from the Department of Greek and Latin in support of his research.  He is currently writing his dissertation on "The Reception of the Text of Thucydides in the Circle of Philip Melanchthon" under the direction of Professor Frank Coulson.
